After writing himself into the record books last year when he became only the second Irish driver to become British Rally Champion, Keith Cronin has this year written a new chapter as he has retained his Championship Title in fine style on the final round in Scarborough in Yorkshire.

Normally known for his outright speed, this time a slower steady approach was what was required as it was necessary to finish just 7th or higher in order to be crowned 2010 British Rally Champion.

With the first stage of the event being run in darkness on Friday night there were 7 more stages on Saturday. At the overnight halt the Pirelli TEG crew were lying in third place after making sure there were no heroics in the darkness, as the stage was quite slippery and braking points were difficult to judge.

The first Saturday stage saw the demise of chief Championship rival, Jonny Greer, when he rolled his Evo 9 out of the rally. This didn’t really ease the pressure on the defending Champion and his co-driver Barry McNulty, as a finish was still vital to realise their dream.

They managed to keep a steady pace for the remainder of the event and steered clear of trouble to bring their Pirelli shod Subaru to the Scarborough finish in third place overall, behind winner Gwyndaf Evans and second placed Alastair Fisher. Their first and second places were enough to ensure they won the ‘Team Championship’ for JRM.
